Colin This will not work. Removing the GUI doesn’t change anything – you need to license R2 Standard if you plan to do this.

You are still dealing with a trial version of Windows Server that needs to be licensed as well as CALs purchased. Like I said. I’ve done this. On four servers. It does in fact work. RobT64 wrote: Everything I’ve suggested, I’ve done.

Hyper-V Server R2 basically only allows you to run the Hyper-V role – the other Server “roles” can’t be install or used on it. Could you please clarify how this works with the license?

Cheers, Colin flag Report. Then the licensing is intact. Colin Spice 1 flag Report. Colin That might work, I’ve not tried that. When I read that Essentials did not support the Hyper-V role I presumed it could not be done that way. If you do that let me know how it goes. I’d be interested to see if it works. Hi RobT64, First I really appreciate that your spending time on this topic. You mentioned that you read that Essentials doesn’t support Hyper-V Role?

Is this WS? I followed the article and created the ISO image, tested it and it worked perfectly. We’ll disagree then. It is not free. Spice 1 flag Report. Care to comment? Chris Microsoft. On this brief, it talks about the definitions with licensing WS; example below page 7 it talks about the “expanded use rights” for certain editions of Windows Server R2.

Hi, Things are going well, step by step. I got the Essentials installed as host with my configured essentials host iso. Stripped back unnecessary roles and features on host. Installed Hyper-V role. Sorry Chris, now I’m even more confused. I downloaded and read that document. Trying to figure out Microsoft Licensing always does my head in. If not, I will adjust my recommendations in future. A question for you. What would be good usage? Do I use one of the other two for remote access? And the other for the Host Server? Thanks again. Spice 3 flag Report. Thanks for the clarification Chris! Hi Guys, All going well. Almost finished with setup. Virtualization is an abstraction layer that creates separate distinct virtual environments allowing the operation of different operating systems, desktops and applications under the same or combined pool of resources.

In the past couple of years, virtualization has gained an incredible rate of adoption as companies consolidate their existing server and network infrastructure, in hope to create a more efficient infrastructure that can keep up with their growing needs while at the same time keep the running and administration costs as low as possible.

This article will be focusing on the Server virtualization platform , which is currently the most active segment of the virtualization industry. As noted previously, with server virtualization a physical machine is divided into many virtual servers — each virtual server having its own operating system. The core element of server virtualization is the Hypervisor — a thin layer of software that sits between the hardware layer and the multiple operating systems virtual servers that run on the physical machine.

The Hypervisor provides the virtual CPUs, memory and other components and intercepts virtual servers requests to the hardware. Currently, there are two types of Hypervisors:.

Type 1 Hypervisor — This is the type of hypervisor used for bare-metal servers. Type 2 Hypervisor — This is the type of hypervisor that runs on top of existing operating systems. Microsoft introduced its server virtualization platform Hyper-V with the release of Windows Server Features like live migration, dynamic memory, network virtualization, remoteFX, Hyper-V Replica, etc.

Hyper-V is a type 1 hypervisor that operates right above the hardware layer. The Windows Server operating system remains above the hypervisor layer, despite the fact the Hyper-V role is installed from within the Windows Server operating system. The physical server where Hypervisor or Hyper-V server role is installed is called the host machine or virtualization server.

Similarly, the virtual machines installed on Hyper-V are called guest machines. The figure below shows the typical traditional server deployment scenario where one server per application model is applied. In this deployment model, each application has its own dedicated physical server. Traditional Server Deployment. Practically, this means that we have 5 underutilized servers. Virtualization comes to dramatically change the above scenario.

There is no doubt that Cloud Computing is hot topic these days. Innovations in cloud computing models have made every industry and company IT departments to re-think their traditional model of computing.

Realizing the benefits and challenges of cloud computing, Microsoft have jumped into the game of Cloud computing by releasing a cloud optimized server operating system called Windows Server Windows Server has dozens of new features and services that makes it cloud ready. Windows Server R2 is the latest version of server operating system from Microsoft and successor of Server Lets take a look at some of the new features Windows Server now supports:.

Server Manager is one of the major changes of Windows Server With this grouping feature, monitoring events, services, installed roles, performance, on multiple servers from a single window is easy, fast and requires very little effort.

Figure 1. Windows Server – Server Manager Dashboard click to enlarge. Similar to the Server Manager of previous version of windows servers, it can be used to install in Windows Server to install server roles and features. PowerShell 3. PowerShell is a command line and scripting tool designed to stretch greater control of window servers. PowerShell scripts allow more tasks to be executed faster and within a short period of time, since the absence of the GUI interface means less crashes and problems.

Centralised management software becomes a crucial tool for the IT department to ensure that all assets are performing at their utmost efficiency, and that they are safeguarded from any anomalies, be it a virus attack, security holes created by unpatched softwares or even the OS.

GFI LanGuard is one such software that promises to provide a consolidated platform from which software, network and security management can be performed, remotely, on all assets under its umbrella.

My question is this. Does Dell provide the media and product keys to be able to install the Hyper-V Host operating system? This host OS would not be the Essentials OS as that has some pretty specific requirements in terms of configuring it as an Essentials server etc.

Does anyone know how Dell handles the media and product key side of this Microsoft entitlement? The server licensing rights have been expanded to allow you to install an instance of Essentials on your physical server to run the Hyper-V role with none of the other roles and features of the Essentials Experience installed , and a second instance of Essentials as a virtual machine VM on that same server with all the Essentials Experience roles and Features.

So in short it will allow you to install a physical Essentials box with only the Hyper-v role no Essentials roles or features and then they can virtualize an instance of essentials. The benefit of this is, that since it is a VM it is easier to recover, yet the disadvantage is the additional resources used to run both OS’s.

Are you asking specifically about ” Hyper-V Server R2 “? If yes the media and licenses are provided for free Link.

Dell does provide a single copy of additional OS media for free. Thanks for your reply to my post. I guess the only question I have at this point is to clarify the situation with the installation media and product key.

So if I ordered Essentials together with the server, my understanding is that it normally comes with 2 CDs we haven’t ordered one of these in about 6 months so it might have changed?? So now if I wanted to install the Hyper-V host do I already have what I need or is there something else I need that is not provided? In other words does Dell provide the installation media a as a separate CD or b do I install the Hyper-V host using the same Essentials media or c do I need to get it somewhere else?

If separate, does Dell provide that or do I need to acquire it another way? If so, where do I get that from? Microsoft has expanded the usage rights of Server R2 Essentials to allow us to install one instance of the Server OS at the Hyper-V host level, and also have one VM running the actual Essentials server. With previous versions of the Windows Server Essentials edition, it was necessary to obtain a hypervisor separately in order to run as a virtual machine—options included the free Microsoft Hyper-V Server or using Windows Server Standard edition to run Hyper-V.

With Windows Server R2 Essentials, the product licensing terms have been expanded to enable you to run one operating system instance on the physical server in order to run Hyper-V, plus a second instance on that server in order to run Essentials as a virtual machine.

Installation wizards have also been created to simplify the process of deploying as a virtual machine by automating the steps necessary to set up and configure the host server environment. Browse Community.
